If you see a little plus (+) sign, left click on it or the Grammarly icon to open the Grammarly suggestions. Once Grammarly is installed in your browser, you may see the green Grammarly logo or a coloured dot at the end of what you are typing. It is really good to use in conjunction with the Hemingway app. In a browser it allows you to check everything that you type, including emails. You will need to log into your account settings to set your language, if it is anything other than the default American English. These include engagement, branding tools and style suggestions. The free account allows you to check basic spelling and grammar mistakes, while the premium account gives you access to more tools.

First you need to download the version you want to install and set up a Grammarly account. It is super simple to use and highlights grammar and spelling issues. Grammarly can be installed as a web browser extension, on desktop or mobile, or as an add-on for Microsoft Word or Outlook and can be found here: Hemingway prefers you to use shorter sentences for clarity, so you can sometimes fix this by splitting a sentence into two, or changing your word choice. Where the text needs improvement is in the sentences that are hard to read. Hemingway sets a goal of using passive voice 3 times in a text, so this example meets the criteria. It can be changed to the active voice – “we can use interpersonal skills”. For example the phrase “interpersonal skills can be used” uses the passive voice. Hemingway has picked up two instances of passive voice. Sentences are highlighted in different colours and suggestions are given for improving your text on the right hand side.Īdverbs are words that modify a verb, and according to Hemingway these should be used sparingly – only 2 in a text. The example below needs some work according to the Hemingway app, showing the readability is at Grade 10. You can choose the Write or Edit tabs on the right hand side to toggle between the two modes. Copy and paste your text into Hemingway, or type directly into the interface. I tend to aim for around Grade 9 (the 3rd year of high school), unless I need to write for a different cohort that requires easy English learning materials.
